It
goes without saying,
it is important to assess your business on a yearly basis. However, at some
point in the life of any business plan, there comes a time when a total
reevaluation may be necessary. Maybe this is due to a change in the industry or
a change in your own goals. Whatever the case, a turning point will define a
new direction, new challenges, and new aspirations.
The
Turning Point
came
after we realized the increasing national herd size was leading to an increasing
number of average alpacas and a burgeoning supply. Without a corresponding
increase in demand for average, the old "supply and demand law" states that
prices must fall. Therefore, doing what everyone else is doing would lead us to
devalued alpacas and an ultimate failure of our farms; tough news to come to
grips with and many nights worrying about which direction to go.
It
isn't that we didn't try
to make improvements along the way. In fact, like many farms, we spent thousands
of dollars on outside breedings. This actually made our situation worse because
we set ourselves back by believing that purchasing average quality females and
then breeding them to top sires would make higher valued offspring and lead
us to success. But when everyone else was believing and doing this, then our
crop of crias was on a par with everyone else, and we were still producing an
average (albeit "new average") quality alpaca.
What
we had to realize
is we must start on a radically different course from the mainstream in order to
pull ahead and achieve our goal of making this a long term, profitable and
enjoyable business venture. The course we set was challenging, but not
impossible, and required additional investment (but this time we were realizing
a return!). Above all, we renewed our enthusiasm about alpacas, where we would
take our breeding program, and even more, where they would take us in the
future.
How
we managed to accomplish this is the knowledge we intend to share with you as a participant of
